Born from Family, Built on Tradition

La Canasta Capitolio was founded in 1962 by Richard and Carmen Abril, a husband-and-wife team with a passion for the bold, comforting flavors of Sonoran Mexican cuisine. What began as a small neighborhood restaurant near the Arizona State Capitol quickly became a beloved institution for the Phoenix community.

For more than six decades, La Canasta has served generations of families the same recipes that Richard and Carmen perfected — from hearty breakfast burritos and green-chile plates to the iconic combination plates that keep regulars coming back week after week.

60 Years Strong

A Diamond Anniversary in 2022

In 2022, La Canasta Capitolio celebrated its 60th anniversary — a milestone that few independent restaurants ever reach. The diamond anniversary was a testament to the loyalty of the Phoenix community and the enduring quality of the food and hospitality that the Abril family has always delivered.

Six decades of service means six decades of memories: first dates, family Sunday breakfasts, post-game meals, and everything in between. We are grateful to every customer who has made La Canasta part of their story.

Sonoran Roots

Authentic Sonoran Recipes

Our menu is rooted in the culinary traditions of the Sonoran Desert — the region that stretches across southern Arizona and northern Mexico. Sonoran cuisine is known for its flour tortillas, mesquite-grilled meats, red and green chile sauces, and the kind of straightforward, satisfying cooking that has nourished communities for generations.

Every dish at La Canasta is made with care, using recipes that have been refined over sixty-plus years. From our breakfast plates to our take-home tamales, the flavors are as authentic today as they were when Richard and Carmen first opened the doors.

A Phoenix Landmark

The Iconic Copper Dome Patio

One of the most recognizable features of La Canasta Capitolio is the Copper Dome patio — a distinctive architectural landmark that has become a symbol of the restaurant and the neighborhood. The patio is a favorite gathering spot for guests who want to enjoy their meal in the open air, just steps from the Arizona State Capitol.

Whether you're stopping in for a quick lunch or settling in for a leisurely weekend breakfast, the Copper Dome patio offers a uniquely Phoenix dining experience that you won't find anywhere else.

Family Owned & Operated

Carrying the Legacy Forward

Today, La Canasta Capitolio is owned and operated by Diane and her brother Richard, who grew up in the restaurant and have dedicated themselves to honoring the legacy their parents built. Under their stewardship, the restaurant has continued to thrive while staying true to the values of quality, community, and family that have always defined La Canasta.

We invite you to come in, pull up a chair, and taste the tradition. Whether you're a longtime regular or visiting for the first time, you are part of the La Canasta family.
